Trinh Van Quy was born on August 8, 1947 in Ca Mau, Vietnam. He was the
third youngest out of nine brothers and sisters in his family. He graduated
from An Xuyen High School and attended Can Tho college. After his first
year of college, Quy was enlisted in the South Vietnamese Army and was sent
to the
military academy in Da Lat for two years. In 1968, he was part of the 21st
Army division. Five years later, he was transferred to the Airborne division
and became a paratrooper. On the 30th of April 1975, Quy was sent to prison
in Ca Mau after Saigon fell to the communists. After three years, he was
eventually
released from prison in 1978.
Ngo Thi Hoan was born on March 22, 1955 in Saigon, Vietnam. She was the
second youngest out of eight brothers and sisters in her family. She moved
with her
family to Ca Mau until the third grade before returning to Saigon. Hoan
graduated from Nguyen Ba Tong High School and attended law school from 1974
to 1975. On the
30th of April 1975, she was forced to abandon law school after the communists
established control of the country.
Quy Trinh and Hoan Ngo were married on December 1, 1979 in Ca Mau. One year
later, they gave birth to a son, Trinh Minh Quang, on October 14, 1980.
In the pursue of
freedom and better opportunities, the families decided to flee the communist
regime. In 1982, twenty five members of the families traveled
on a small boat to Malaysia. After six months in Malaysia, they traveled
to the Philippines and stayed there for another six months.
Finally, their prayers were answered and they were given the opportunity to seek asylum
in the United States on May 19, 1983. Several months later, they gave birth to a second
child, a beautiful daughter. Trinh Phi Quyen Linda was born on November 8, 1983 at
Washington Adventist Hospital. The family lived in Langley Park, MD for five years
before moving to Silver Spring, MD. Everything they had were invested in their two
children who received the best care any parents can offer.
